will you be stating that you want "quirky or kitschy"?
I took the photo of the road side business I mentioned (where I had to park, gently approach, introduce myself and beg for the photo) and I am holding it in abeyance for the contest. Then I ran across another that is kitsch as kitsch can.......
So now I'm torn.
I think the photographers, and the voters, need to get back to keeping their eye on the theme a bit better. Lately I think we have lost our way at times and submitted pretty photos that are only peripherally related to the theme and have gotten away with it.

It doesn't have to be a business. It could be a yard decorated with concrete statues and such.

Antique/sepia leaves the image generally intact. Turning it into a fractal would be too much.
