I use the same Joby Gorillapod ballhead on my regular tripod, my Gorillapod, and my monopod, so I can quickly switch the camera from one to the other with the quick-release clip that comes with the ballhead.

Google "gorillapod ballhead" to find it for around $30-$40.

On Edit: I use it with my Sony NEX 5N and with my longest (210mm) lens it is plenty steady. I don't know how firm it would be with a really heavy camera. Maybe try one out at your local camera store. Oh, and it has a built-in bubble level.
