Shakespeare is meant to be viewed. Reading is good, but doesn't give the full experience. So,

McKellen's Richard III

Ralph Fiennes' Coriolanus

Branagh's Henry V. Olivier's version is also worth a viewing

For a bit of comedy, Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing

TV series: Alec Guinness' Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Smiley's People

/on edit/ Surprised this one hasn't been mention: The West Wing. It falls off after the fourth season, but the first few years, some of the best acting and writing ever.
