The only time I've had it applied to me directly here in Tucson was when I first moved here. I opened
a gate leading into my apartment complex at the same time a Mexican man (probably in his early 30's)
was coming out.

He said, very mildly derisively, "Hi, gringo." -- JUST as I very pleasantly said, "Hello."

He looked a little guilty and stepped aside to let me go through first.
