I'm close to 50, I was pretty young, 7 in fact, but I can remember the tragedy of the Munich games pretty well. And I can definitely recall the national outpouring of joy 4 years late when Bruce Jenner won the Decathelon in Montreal. Yes, that Bruce Jenner, the one most people under 40 probably only know as the stepfather to a bunch of Kardashians.
