Jews were discriminated against in higher education institutions (in a policy known as Numerus clausus), by government institutions, and in professional advancement.
Anti-Zionistic propaganda was common in the Soviet media.
Many Jews were dissatisfied with the political and economic situation.
Increased nationalism among Soviet nations made some Jews consider their right for a national identity.
There was increased communication between Soviet Jews and Jews worldwide.

Israel need to bolster their losing population race against "the arabs" and grow a state that suffers ongoing emigration to the United States and Europe. In the 70's and 80's there were many generous incentives to emigrate to both Israel and the United States.
The people who emigrate to Israel bring with them the traditions of their original countries. Whether they come from the old soviet union, Europe, or Ethiopia their birth countries instill traditions that form their character.
It's like italian catholics, or mexican catholics immigrating to the United States. Both are catholic however when they sit down for dinner there will be big differences.
Much of what we experience in the United States as uniquely "jewish" culture, for example food, be that matzo ball soup, gefilte fish, or bagels with salmon and cream cheese are actually unique to people of jewish faith and background from Europe. (Ashkenazi)
People who originated in the mediterranean, Middle East or Ethiopia did not share those traditions in their countries of origin. (Sephardi and Mizrahi)
Like any country made up of immigrants, Israel is in a sense a "melting pot" like the United States.
For that reason, whether it be language, food, or other aspects of culture, People of Jewish faith or backgrounds who emigrated from Russia to Israel. Have a great affinity for their country of origin.
