Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi early Sunday annulled most of an extraordinary Nov. 22 decree that gave him near-absolute power and plunged the country into a deeply divisive political crisis that has seemed to worsen by the day.

However, a Dec. 15 referendum on a new constitution, which opposition forces wanted canceled, will go ahead as planned, a spokesman said.
