First, obviously they could be exaggerating

Second, afaik, campaign finance filings aren't audited or otherwise "independently verified". They're merely official filings from the campaigns. I assume it would be perjury or some other crime to knowingly file false campaign finance filings, but that doesn't count as "independently verified"
