BANGOR, Maine Democrats in Maine appeared to retake control of both chambers of the Legislature after Tuesdays elections, though the exact tallies wont be known until several close races are decided.
As of 7:45 a.m. Monday, Democrats had won 13 seats in the Maine Senate and were leading in another six races, and had won 68 seats in the Maine House and were leading in another 14 races, according to unofficial results compiled by the Bangor Daily News. Republicans had won 10 and were leading in five races in the Senate and had won 42 and were leading in 18 in the House. Non-party or Green Independent candidates took one seat in the Senate and had won two seats in the House, with a lead in another two races.
It takes 18 seats in the Senate and 76 seats in the House for a majority.
But for many legislative hopefuls in Maine, the suspense didnt end with the close of the polls on Election Day. Several races across the state in which all results were available early Wednesday were too close to call with a less than 150-vote spread.
