They've veered as far as they can in catering to the RW crazies, and demographics are turning against them. Hence their manic efforts to suppress the vote.
It's unsustainable, and that's what has to drive them back left, not the voices of individuals like McCain. They just need to decide exactly what part of their core "values" they refuse to give up. My guess is it will be supporting unchecked corporate power, and they'll need to become liberal on social issues, throwing the doctrinaire fundamentalist Christian wing under the bus.
