18 Oakland cops may get serious discipline (over Occupy/Scott Olsen) [View all]

Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said Friday that he is seeking to fire two officers, demote a third and suspend 15 others in connection with their handling of Occupy demonstrations in the past year.

Jordan also revealed for the first time that one of his officers - not an officer from an outside agency - was responsible for firing a beanbag that struck Iraq war veteran Scott Olsen in the head last Oct. 25 and critically injured him.

Olsen was among a group of more than a thousand people that took to the streets after police cleared an elaborate Occupy encampment of tents outside City Hall. Several outside police agencies were called in to help.

City officials said state law prohibited them from identifying officers who faced discipline, and they declined to go into detail about what investigators had found that warranted the sanctions.
