My personal opinion on the 2nd amendment:

Given the history (up through the American Revolution and beyond) of some "fringe" Native Americans assaulting European settlers, some frontier tax/census districts were actually organized as "Capt Penny's company", "Capt Davis's company", etc.

I think the amendment was meant to address the perceived need for settlers to be able to organize to defend themselves, whether planned in advance or as needed, as the US Army had been largely disbanded after the American Revolution and was not ready to "ride to the rescue" at that time.

And of course, "one-on-one" "defense" against "the red man".

In the 21st century, we (generally) have other resources to call on, versus trying to take out the bad folks yourself (and possibly risking others).

It must be nice to have a government that works. Voltaire2 Apr 2019 #1
