In reply to the discussion: Trump appoints Jon Voight, Mike Huckabee to Kennedy Center board [View all]onenote
(43,156 posts)First, the Board of Trustees itself is made up of 6 Officers, 23 ex officio members established by statute (e.g., the Speaker of the House, Mayor of DC, etc.), and 36 members appointed by the President for 6 year terms.
The Kennedy Center Honors recipients are chosen through a process that involves recommendations from the public and an Artists Committee (whose members serve fixed terms) that are reviewed by a Special Honors Advisory Committee that is made up of two members from an Artists Committee (whose members serve fixed terms), two former honorees, and two members of the Board. Their recommendations are reviewed by the President of the Kennedy Center, the Executive Committee and the producers of the annual televised event.
Surprisingly, very few of the Board members have been (or currently are) performers or artists. Voight is the exception to the rule. Indeed, apart from names like Valerie Jarrett and Susan Rice (and, now, Hucksterbee), I doubt many DUers would recognize most of the current board members.
