GOP lawmaker: Deficit a 'great talking point' when Dems have power, different with GOP in charge [View all]

The chairman of the powerful Republican Study Committee on Thursday admitted that deficit reduction has taken a back seat on the list of GOP concerns now that the party controls the House, Senate, and White House.

Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.) told the New York Times that deficit reduction is a more popular "talking point" when Republicans are in the minority in Washington. “It’s a great talking point when you have an administration that’s Democrat-led,” Walker said. “It’s a little different now that Republicans have both houses and the administration.”

Last year, Republicans pointed to the deficit as the most challenging issue Trump would face in office. But since January, those concerns have largely disappeared. “I can’t think of a more challenging issue that will face this next president,” said then-Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.), now Trump's Director of National Intelligence. “And yet in this presidential election year, this is not even being debated. This is not an issue that’s being presented to the American people in any way.”

“There’s been less talk about it this year with a Republican-led administration than there has been the last seven or eight years,” Walker said Thursday.
