In reply to the discussion: What was the Specific Event that Made You Realise that Republicans Are Evil? [View all]JCanete
(5,272 posts)18. That's going way further than I would typically. They do evil things, which I'm sure most of them
justify to themselves in the name of good. Then there are sociopaths, and I'm sure more than a handful with an R after their name, but they aren't "evil" either, they just literally have no empathy for others.
As a low information citizen, I realized something was off at some point after 911.. just about everything I was hearing in the media seemed wrong. None of the rhetoric seemed to gel with what I thought I knew about our nation and its values...thank you public schools back when there was at least some modicum of civics being taught in the class-room...
I caught an O'reilley interview with Ben Stiller and watched how he totally manipulated it, framing his "no spin zone" as such, but then asking questions in voice-over that couldn't be responded to by Ben as meta-commentary on the interview. Then in that same segment he went to an interview with Jeanine Garofalo, and I kind of fell in love. She called him out for being a bullshit artist who spins everything. After that I found out she had a show with Sam Seder on Air America and became a junky of all of them...Randi Rhodes, Thom Hartman, Rachel maddow, Stephanie Miller, etc.
Anyway, I guess to answer the question, it was Hannity and his "liberal" sidekick first, and then O'reilley, who opened my eyes most memorably about something being way way way fucked up. And as I got acquainted to other news I was even more offended by CNN's absence of not only fact checking, but opinion itself.
