(21,786 posts)The Glorious Revolution specifically refers to the deposition of James II of England by William of Orange. James was a Catholic, pro-French, and sought to impose French-style absolute monarchy and, it was feared, to re-establish Catholicism; bloody Mary Tudor's reign wasn't so far out of living memory at the time, and many people, understandably, weren't keen on the prospect. It was the Glorious Revolution that led to the establishment of constitutionally limited monarchy in England and to the English Bill of Rights of 1689 (which among other things influenced the American Bill of Rights). The French Revolution was a failure that ended in bloody terror with tumbrils rolling through the streets of Paris carrying victims for the guillotine and led to Bonaparte assuming the title of Emperor, and attempting to impose an enlightened despotism not merely on France but on the whole of Europe.
If you have to have a revolution, it rather seems to me that the French one is a terrible model to follow.
