The bonobos you mention are a female-dominated society; whilst male bonobos might want to fight with neighbors and make threat displays, the females effectively say "bullshit on you, I'm going to socialize with the neighbors" and leave the males no choice but to comply. So my alpha-male observation still stands. The hierarchical structures are put in place by males who want to be (or work their way up to) alpha-male.

I'd be all for having the females in charge, except that politics seems to attract the few that are ersatz-males in their lust for power.
