Your more advanced societies tend to see political leaders as people, with flaws and conflicts, and the corresponding need for constant feedback and opinion, not a silly, "Yay or boo" shouting contest.
I think I blame sports. I never got the kind of sports fan who would scream and hiss when a justified foul is called on one of their own players. Or the yahoos that sit behind the plate at baseball / softball / Little League games, screaming obscenities at the batter, thinking they're "helping" their team. As though anyone would want the game decided by a well-timed distraction.
Now that we're all fed politics on TV, the radio, and the Internet, apparently we're going with the "sports" model.
Grab a giant foam finger and scream nonsense. Whoever wins must be the "best."
