A family in Berks County celebrated Laney Brown's eighth birthday Friday, knowing she won't be able to blow out the candles a year from now. Laney, who is losing her battle with leukemia, has captured the hearts of so many from across the country. The community has rallied around her, hoping for a miracle. Thousands of people are expected to sing Christmas carols to Laney at 7 p.m. on Saturday. They will gather in the 400 block of Chestnut Street in West Reading to help fulfill one of her final wishes -- to hear Christmas carolers.

There are plenty of reasons to despair for this country, what we've become, what we are becoming.
But this happened, not two hours ago.
