(52,162 posts)Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Pittsburg were some of the most segregated cities in terms of housing and school that one could find. To this day both Cleveland and Chicago have vastly more segregated schools than those I have worked in, in NC. They may have hand laws on the books banning segregation, but they sure weren't close to being effective laws. When my dad got his first teaching job in 1964, he worked in Little Washington PA, as a speech therapist meaning he went to several schools. He worked in all the elementary schools which were either all white or all black. The all black school had no principal (the 5th/6th grade teacher was the principal), one teacher for every two grades, and never had supplies. The all white schools had a principal, one teacher per grade, and enough supplies that my dad could take some for the all black school.
