The first, we were separated by gender and we saw the female reproductive system and they told us how babies were made. Parents had to sign a permission slip for me to attend. In 8th grade, it was more of the same but they didn't separate us and we had a male teacher, the wrestling coach, give the little pep talk. I couldn't imagine not being taught about the reproductive system and how it worked. It's science for goodness sake.
I think they should continue to handle it the way they did when I was in 5th grade, if the parents don't want their kids to be taught sex education, then they indicate on a permission slip they should be taught abstinence only. Then the kids with parents who aren't afraid of science and education, can have their children educated both at home and in school.
