(3,709 posts)Can Judd win? Possibly...I certainly never thought that Rand Paul could, but I was wrong. Cyrano asked in one reply to this thread if the tea party was dimming in KY. I think it is to the extent that is dimming everywhere.
Kentucky politics have always been a bit strange. We were once a Democratic state but Reagan changed that, but Kentucky actually went for Bill Clinton one election. Our current governor, Steve Breshear is a fairly liberal Democrat, and I have hope that the next governor will be his Lt. Gov, a good liberal.
The congressional district that I live in (Lexington) just elected Andy Barr, a true nutcase, as US Rep, defeating a Democrat...or DINO...as Ben Chandler proved to be. Lexington is a more liberal community than the rest of the state (other than Louisville), but Chandler had done nothing to distinguish himself and Barr won this year after narrowly losing last election cycle.
At the risk of invoking the gun, god, and pickup truck meme, this state will most likely remain conservative for a long time. But remember this is a state where the small town of Vicco, KY pop ~1500 just voted to ban discrimination against gays. Vicco is nestled deep in the mountains...if they can be enlightened, there is hope.
The tide appears to be turning against Mitch...but not sure which direction yet...to a more progressive side or toward the Teabaggers. With Judd polling so well, against McConnell, maybe we are looking at a sea change here. Going to be an interesting couple of years.
