before a you can build a power base. It was only by a fluke that he got elected to the Senate.

Kind of reminds me of Toby Moffett who thought he was going to be the next great Democrat from the state of Connecticut back in the 1980's. The only thing he became great at was losing elections (primaries, no less) and lobbying in DC.
