The sports media wanted him to be Arnold Palmer to Tiger Wood's Jack Nicklaus, but he never lived up to that role. At the very beginning of Tiger Wood's golfing career a number of sports media people looked for an Arnold Palmer like rival for Woods. I do not know why, but Phil Mickelson was the main person who they wanted/pushed as his rival. Mickelson did win a few major tournaments, but he was never really a rival to Tiger Woods like Arnold Palmer was to Jack Nicklaus. In addition, as you probably already know Phil Mickelson never won anywhere as many major tournaments as Tiger Woods. I am not sure Phil Mickelson won anywhere near the number of golf tournaments Tiger Woods won.
