them are correct. The biggest factor was probably that early Christianity was in a struggle with Mithraism, whose biggest celebration was on the 25th, not the solstice. It had to do with the birth of Mithra. Constantine was heavily influenced by his mother, Helena, who was a Christian. Many of his subsequent actions were done at her bequest. She was responsible for the Church of the Nativity in Palestine/Israel and the subsequent establishment of retreats in Sinai. Interesting woman. It is also quite true that the Puritans regarded the celebration as a pagan holiday. The Mormons regard April 6th as the probable date of birth. They are not far off, I would imagine. Having raised sheep, that would seem more logical to me.
