(8,333 posts)Sure, some are jerks. But some of them are frustrated with their lives and long for something better. The lottery is a tenuous thread of hope. Even though the odds are near to impossible, the payoff is big and people do win it.
So, if people need to contribute to the lottery, even though the odds are overwhelmingly against them, let them be. If your friend wants to help the poor, he could set up a separate fund. Let people make their own choices, and he should accept their decisions without judgment. Some may contribute to both, some may split the money, some may realize the futility of the lottery and give all their share to the homeless fund.
There are other things he can do, like periodic food drives so people can empty their pantries. We do it at work, and I'm getting set to haul a car-load of boxes to the food bank on Friday.
Most important of all, he can lead by example. Simply by being an activist for the homeless, people will notice his work and become more aware of the homeless and if they feel compassion, they will join him.
