Charleston has the Ports and the Old Boy Civil War Network ... But the Manufacturing in the North of the State was taking over the "Good Ole Boys."
THEN...Charleston got Boeing and they have the Development of their "outer islands" like Kiawah, Johns Island, etc. and BOOM is ON AGAIN to try to ensnare the Boomer Retirees that "the think" are going to DEVELOP ...after the Housing Bust and BOOMERS HAVE NO MONEY!
It's incredible what goes on down there. As I stated...I grew up there...plus, I still have relatives there so I watch it closely. 
It's like watching a "Crash Cart"..imho because they don't believe in Global Warming where the outer islands are in jeopardy and they don't know with the Nuclear and else they are digging themselves into environmental peril on both fronts....and I often wonder (sad as it is as to how much I love the flora and fauna of the place) that I will cry when it's gone...but, I blame the very same "Ole Boy Network" for doing it.
Hell Yeah...they will probably move to St. Kitts and live awhile longer in splendor or maybe some South American Country Inland where they, their children, grandchildren will create a NEW INLAND EMPIRE of EXILES from South Carolina!
