it's popular. It's also unique (for open-minded people) that it comes from South Korea. I'm encouraged and glad that our popular culture now includes Gangnam Style.
I haven't been to a dance club in years but I don't need to go to one to know that this song is being played in every venue with a dance floor and alcohol and the dance (I'm sure) has caught on like the Macarena and Electric Slide, etc. This may account for it's immense popularity here in the U.S.
