Several local Tribes (Yurok, Hupa, Karuk, Tolowa, Wyot) have increasing political and economic power.

Some of the instigators are faculty.

Many of the students come from outside Humboldt County and come to Humboldt because they are progressive with an environmental tilt. Lots of resentment towards the university because of conservative locals.
