7. workers should always be part of the conversation

You can sit a worker down and say hey look we're not doing so well right now, but if you hang in there with us and make some sacrifices with us when things turn around we can afford to give you a share of the profit or a bonus or a raise. Workers don't want to bankrupt mom and pop stores. They just want to feel vested. They want to feel important and respected. They want to feel they have a stake in the success of the business. I have noticed that workers perform better at employee owned stores than just about any other kind of store I have frequented.
