Walmart is striving to become a national "Company Store." [View all]

There was a time in the 20th Century where workers in coal mines and other industries were paid in chits only redeemable at the company store. With the new emphases on driving down wages and pricing that other retailers cannot match you have to wonder if there is some sort of collusion to make this happen.

"This story is the kind of reason that unions were so desperately needed when they were formed. People working for scrip instead of money, forced to pay insane markups as they had to shop at the company store, no safety precautions, child labor...always remember, because no one should have to be in that position."
