When Bill Barr was AG.

Note that there was an unbeknownst to DU, Grand Jury that had been empaneled and that returned an indictment against Smirnov in February 2024 (so that Grand Jury may have been around as far back as December/January 2023) -

Grand Jury Returns Indictment Charging FBI Confidential Human Source with Felony False Statement and Obstruction Crimes

I wouldn't be surprised if other investigatory stuff is ongoing after what happened with Smirnov. Will have to stay tuned.
