If you believe that everyone who has an affair "lacks character," then you have to apply that to Martin Luther King, Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, and whole host of other liberal icons and people who are otherwise great human beings. You might be in the minority on this.
It is true that some people have no moral bounds, but a lot of people overstep their bounds when they are confident, sanguine, and full of life. It is not inevitable, nor is it excusable, but it is human nature.
