(14,517 posts)Derby City has two huge Ford plants and we also have GE Appliance Park and several large chemical plants along with many other smaller industries. We have auto carrier cars, vehicle parts cars (such as for frames) and hundreds of tank cars and box cars pass very close every day.
A major derailment could easily wind up in my front yard and these tracks go right through much of the city in densely populated areas. I will credit CSX for keeping these tracks in top condition, probably at the insistence of Ford as well as City officials. A major accident on these tracks would likely shut down one or both Ford plants within a few days.
I did discover that railroads have web sites where we can send in complaints or notify them of problems, as I did a few years back when there was a gap between two sections of rail that became very noisy. They came out within a week or so and fixed that issue.
It's amazing when we think of how accustomed we are to the noise of trains and as a former volunteer firefighter I try to not think too much of how bad a major accident could be. I do however worry often about how vulnerable tracks across our nation are to terrorism.
