In reply to the discussion: CA-SEN: Katie Porter announces her candidacy (For the record, I am undecided) [View all]Sympthsical
(9,887 posts)101. It doesn't serve us to pretend untrue things.
It's known and obvious that Feinstein should probably have retired last term so another Democrat could take that seat and begin climbing the ladder. (I firmly believe had she retired, De Leon would not have been the alternative).
However, that did not happen. Fine. Now it will. Great.
But condemning true sentiments, if perhaps phrased indelicately, speaks to credibility.
She's retiring. We'll get a good Democrat in there. Wins all around.

OP
Porter is a superstar and she barely prevailed over a very (very) poor Republican candidate

I worry about that, too, but hopefully it being a presidential election year will help.

I just realized there is more potential to garner votes from UC Irvine students than is currently

The student vote at UCI is certainly a source of potential pickups in CA-47.

He was being much smarter about it than we were. Nothing was on the line in San Francisco.

I like the idea of Katie Porter in the US Senate, but that will almost certainly come at the cost of

Yes, CA-47 is a new district. The odds of a Democrat winning this seat are slim.

Porter was redistricted into an even redder district than her original one

I doubt it. Running in the midterms in a newly drawn district is the worst case scenario.

Works out for whom? For Porter likely. Not for Democrats in the House.

That's the problem. Where will one find a candidate like Katie Porter out of the blue?

She ended her campaign with $8 million unspent balance in her campaign account

Don't know but guessing that it was early on when her national fund raising was beginning

My first thought too. CA-47 was made much tougher with redistricting in 2022.

So far looks like Porter, Schiff, and Barbara Lee are considering runs.

She had better retire. She's had a nice long career in the Senate. Time for new blood.

That's the sort of talk you aim at a very distinguished US Senator with a long record

As she has concluded without snipes from what's supposed to be a forum that supports Democrats.

In order to run for the Senate, does a House member have to give up his/her seat?

Feinstein will be retiring. Everyone is aware. She has not yet announced her pending retirement,

Seems like if progressives announce a primary against an incumbent there's massive pushback

Correct. I love Dianne Feinstein. She's earned my admiration and respect.

You don't seem to grasp the idea that Dianne Feinstein will not be running in 2024.

Maybe as a courtesy, but then again Feinstein would have resigned if she also believed in
