Seems to be a common trend among Americans who find themselves in foreign jails. They think US law follows them globally and foreign law doesn't apply to them. See Otto Wormbier, arrested for stealing propaganda posters in N. Korea, Amanda what's her name, arrested for murder in Italy. The 2 hikers who crossed the border from S. Korea into N. Korea and wound up in a N. Korea jail. And the list goes on. Then reality happens. Yet interestingly enough, have no issue at all when the US arrests and jails foreigners. See the Russian weapons dealer we just swapped for Griner, we've had him in jail for some years now.
