(1,996 posts)I do however wonder if people understand the gist of why she was arrested and held in the first place. Let's please put aside that Griner is African-American, female and, LGBTQ person and look at it reasonably. Here, she plays in the WNBA and in the off season she plays for a Professional Russian Basketball team. The land of Vlad Putin and Mother Russia. She is found carrying two hash oil cartridges for vaping.
The following from Yahoo News:
In the US, hash and hash oil like marijuana are Schedule 1 drugs. It's still illegal to use and possess hash under federal law, and its legality varies state by state.
In Russia, cannabis is illegal. An individual possessing less than 6 grams of cannabis or two grams of hash can be fined or jailed for up to 15 days. Possessing any more than that becomes a more serious criminal offense.
Ms Griner was accused of having less than a gram.

I would say in this case she was held way too long and being somewhat of an American Celebrity she became a bargaining chip for Putin. I would also say that Brittany Griner used poor judgment in ending up in a situation like this and has no one to blame but herself.
I know my opinion on the matter will not be a popular one but it is based on the facts. I also do applaud President Biden in gaining her eventual release. But the entire matter could have been avoided in not taking hash oil to Russia.
