Good article, btw. Ive long felt that Rush never got a lot of critical praise (except maybe towards the very end of their career, when their longevity and following among successful musicians compelled some degree of reanalysis) because rock critics tend to look to coolness, and Rush was more about middle class values and integrity.
If one is of the school that says rock is cock - i.e. a genre entirely about male sexual charisma and norm-breaking - then yeah, Rush probably wont be to ones taste.
If one is more into rock as a musical form through which technical virtuosity can be expressed, Rush might be more to ones liking.
