15. Calling it a large round is misleading

A large round is 45-70 which can anchor an elk or larger animal, and easily create an 11” wound channel. .243, .270, any 30 caliber round is much larger. .223 is a varmint round, it’s been around quite a while and replaced .222 in 57 or so after being adopted to replace .308 which was heavy and cumbersome. It is a small caliber, and in several states including mine, too small to be used for deer. And yea it was designed for army use, but only as a way to carry more ammo, not a weigh to kill more people. .223 is a fine round for varmints, from prairie dogs to coyotes, as I said it excels as a ranch rifle round. The most common bullet is 62gr, which is small for a rifle round, in contrast 9mm nato is a standard 124gr, one of the most effective lethal rounds historically is a 115gr 357 mag. a 62 gr bullet is by no means a large round. It’s a fast round in a rifle because of the powder charge, but we are talking center fire rifles. It replaced the 308 that was 150gr plus.
