(47,675 posts)That alone makes the current job draining. I only do contract work now (when I can get it). My wife's got the 4:55 alarm ("No, I HATE this world" life these days. The insurance is pretty good (not awesome, just pretty good). She likes her job, but it doesn't pay enough, at least for what she's worth.
In many ways, salaried positions are worse. You work as many hours as necessary to get the job done but don't get extra pay. I've done my share of 80+ hour weeks. At least my wife gets overtime if she crosses the 40 hour line. Even still, she puts in a lot of hours (unpaid) doing prep-work here at home.
It isn't just outsourcing we need to be worried about. It's what's going on with labor practices here at home and on many different fronts. Consolidation of companies into conglomerates is generally a bad thing for the workers. Bean counters make decisions that change the lives of hundreds or even thousands just because there's a small percentage change in net profit. They don't care. A buddy of mine worked for AOL (since before it was called that) and after they bought Netscape, some bean counter shut down an entire half of the building he was in. He was on the wrong side of the dividing line. No performance reviews, no reassignments. If you go through this door to get to your cubicle or office (all levels), you're out of a job.
