(21,731 posts)Blacks, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Latin Americans, people from the Middle East experience racism and bigotry daily in countless ways. Whites who claim it doesn't exist or that it is minimal or that they don't see it are deliberately lying or are so accustomed to the bias in society and in their own bubble that they don't even recognize it for what it is.
There isn't a single White person in this country who doesn't see or hear it. Whites with "subtle" bias, or open racism assume that other Whites agree with them when they speak among themselves. It is not enough to not be racist. You have to be anti racist with them, refusing to be silent for the sake of keeping peace.
Trump says what they think but feel they can't say. He speaks for them. Jimmy Carter said it best several years ago in regard to Ronald Reagan. When Carter was asked if he thought that Reagan was racist, Carter said that Reagan makes White Americans feel comfortable with their own biases and prejudices. Trump does that on steroids, making people feel able to be open to express and act on their prejudices.
That is the root of Trump's support.
