(2,983 posts)well, you know how it goes.
It is possible that Mitt Romney could steal it, yes. What happened in 2000 and in 2004 proves that elections can indeed be stolen if you have enough money and little enough integrity to do so.
I do wonder though, how we would react if 2012 was stolen? I remember the protests of 2000, I remember the angry commentators, I remember various books written, numerous people talking at length about the failure of our democracy. I remember a generation that suddenly started caring about politics more than ever before. I was 16 in 2000. The years since I think, have hardened a lot of us. There are quite a lot of very fanatic democrats and quite a lot of very fanatic republicans.
So where would it lead us? What would our reaction be? Or - and this is also important... what would the conservative reaction be to an Obama victory? Might they accuse him of stealing the election? It wouldn't surprise me if they did. While I have no crystal ball with with to predict the future with any certainty, I am afraid that the divide is becoming too great for us to maintain anything even resembling a peaceful democracy. Sooner or later, if we can't find a way to co-exist, to work together despite our differences... then I suspect there may in time be an armed conflict that makes our civil war look like a skirmish.
All that said... I will not live in Teabagville, but nor would I want to live in OccupyLand. If I must, I'll leave for a Nation that still maintains some measure of sanity. We've been slowly losing ours for years.
