Are human beings who come from a variety of backgrounds. They have life experiences just as do the rest of us. Some of them use their experiences to inform their work. Some of them use their experiences to make political statements and raise social consciousness.
George Takei knows what it is like to be unlawfully imprisoned for being a member of a minority group. He speaks out. Different actresses know what it is like to have their careers threatened for refusing sexual advances. They are speaking out.
Speaking out helps--no matter who is doing it or in which public arena. What matters is the content of the message and the motivation for sharing it.
