GOP Congressman Peter King of New York on Monday became the 16th Republican member of Congress to announce their retirement prior to the 2020 elections.
Rep. King cited being with family as the primary reason for his retirement, expressing a desire to spend more time with children and grandchildren after 28 years of service in Congress.
King won re-election to his seat in 2018 by six points, the smallest margin of victory ever for his seat, one that Democrats are sure to target in the 2020 elections.
Since January 2017, 101 members of the Republican Caucus have exited their seats, a total of 42% of the original contingent.
NNP Quote: After talks w my family I will not seek re-election in 2020. Difficult decision as my 28 yrs in Congress have been extremely fulfilling while fighting for my constituents: 9/11 & Sandy funding/combating terrorism & MS-13. I thank residents of NY2 for allowing me to represent you. Statement from Representative Peter King
NNP Background: Prior to the 2018 Midterm Elections, 50 GOP members of congress retired, foreshadowing the grim results that awaited the party in that election cycle. Although thus far the 2020 cycle is not showcasing as drastic an exodus as in 2018, Republican retirements and departures are still outpacing Democrats by over a 2-1 margin.
The discrepancy between Democratic and Republican lawmakers calling it quits has rekindled speculation that the political stars in 2020 may once again align against the GOP.
