In reply to the discussion: Jennifer Rubin: "Pelosi was right to wait" [View all]DFW
(54,635 posts)The more the House Democrats held off on impeachment, the more likely Trump was to think he could get away with absolutely anything, and then commit a blatantly impeachable offense.
Sure, there was always the danger he would learn restraint and caution, but come on. Trump? Who truly thought THAT was likely?
Pelosi was waiting for SOMETHING as drastic as the Ukraine scandal to crop up (PUBLICLY, that is) because she judged that to be the nature of the beast. She obviously felt the odds were with her, and she wasn't wrong.
As for Jennifer Rubin, no one should get the idea she is "getting more reasonable" or drifting toward a Democratic view. She is a hard line Republican. As a pundit not running for re-election to Congress in some lean-red district in Pennsylvania, she can voice her disgust with what has become of her party without fearing being tossed out on her ear because Sheldon Adelson is pissed enough to fund a primary challenge from the Republican lunatic fringe. Rubin can analyze Pelosi's tactics objectively because she doesn't have a dog in that fight. She wants someone like Ryan back in as speaker and someone like Cheney back in as president. As a Republican, she is sober enough to comprehend the damage Trump is doing to her Party, even if most of their leadership and Congresscritters do not get it. Sure, polls say 91% of Republicans support Trump. They would support reviving the Salem witch burnings, too, if given the chance.
