(34,423 posts)42. There are two reasons for the drills -
To teach children what to do - AND - to ensure that the plan they have can be carried out in the time they would be expected to have to do so. The former can be done with a warning - the latter cannot. Whether the spaces are adequate, the children understand the directions well enough to carry them out when they are nervous, whether people can assume whatver position they need to be in without advance warning, etc. can only be tested when the drill comes without warning.
I've been in education most of my life - and drills (of all sorts) are rarely announced. At most, we are warned there will be a (fire, tornado, active shooter) drill during the coming week.

Thing was, tho....they did not have weekly news and video of nukes dropping on schools
