Of course WWII didn't destroy evil. How could it? Evil is not a thing that exists "out there" like a dragon to be slain, once and for all. It is a part of who we are, even the best of us. Government cannot protect us from evil, because evil resides within it just as it resides win all of us. Government is just a way to mitigate the damage of the worst parts of ourselves. When it fails, it becomes that which we most fear.

Government can't succeed if we don't recognize the evil within, because if we don't, we will project on to the "others" and seek to destroy them, unconsciously becoming that which we hate. It has happened to the Republican Party, and it is happening to us now. It won't end well.
