When my wife and I adopted our first dog five years ago it changed my life. We've rescued six since then, gave one to a friend's elderly mother who spent her last four years with that dog as her constant companion. My wife and I have had a lot of shakeups over the past five years, including job losses, bankruptcy, foreclosure, and illness, but the hardest thing I've had to do was stand with one of my dogs as he was put to sleep...
