(63 posts)The Republicans have controlled congress for 18 of the last 22 years. Most states have had Republican governors for the same amount of time. Most states have Republican legislatures. Again, all this goes back to before all the media schemes we complain about existed.
You're right about the popular vote. People in cities are less willing to be divided by what Republicans throw at us, but they aren't immune. Trump won in districts and states traditionally considered blue. We (Democrats) play into the divisiveness. Our base is a coalition of different demographics. One of the fundamental ways Democrats fail is by not maintaining a platform and ideology that presents our diversity a common set of objectives.
We are all in this together. Including the white, Christian, males. We can't communicate that with a campaign slogan. We have to say it with our platform and policies. Many Democratic politicians throw out policies on the campaign trail just to attract certain voter demographics. It's very easy for Republicans to take those policies to mainstream voters and say "See, the Democrats are out to get you".
By focusing on how we want to improve our communities for everyone we give mainstream voters something they want to be a part of. It takes more effort, and time, to set up. Without it our country will continue to be divided.
