In the 1939-40 Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union, Finnish ski troops would ski to the battlefield, then remove their skis and fight on foot. The Soviets tried to ski into battle, and got mown down by the Finns.

The Soviets ended up winning that war, but they had to settle for far less territory from the Finns than they had invaded for, and paid a huge price in Russian blood for it.
